En ese tenor, el Gobierno canadiense dijo que aumentará su contribución financiera para ayudar a las víctimas de la hambruna de Somalia con unos 50 MDD, que se sumarán a los más de 22 millones ya facilitados este año a la región.
Por su parte, el presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, informó de la donación a Somalia de cinco millones de dólares y 50 toneladas de alimentos para contrarrestar la crisis alimentaria que sufre el país africano.
El grupo radical islámico Al Shabab, vinculado a Al Qaeda y que controla gran parte del sur de Somalia, aseguró en una rueda de prensa que organizaciones de ayuda humanitaria de la ONU siguen sin tener su permiso para actuar en su zona, donde se ha declarado oficialmente el estado de hambruna.
“Las agencias a las que hemos ofrecido acceso (a la zona afectada por la hambruna) no estaban en la lista de organizaciones prohibidas”, concretó un portavoz.
Entre las agencias a las que Al Shabab prohibió hace un año actuar en la zona se encuentran el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA), la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y Unicef.
