1. EL RENACIMIENTO DEL BODHISATTVA

Pensando en la conveniencia de dar a su hijo un nombre que le favorecería toda la vida, lo llamó Príncipe de la Palabra Sabia. En realidad, el príncipe no era un bebé ordinario, ni esta era su primera vida. Hace millones de años había sido fiel discípulo de un Buda, un Gran Ser Iluminado, ya olvidado por la gente. Deseaba fervientemente convertirse en un Buda, igual a su querido maestro. Renació muchas veces, a veces entre animales, a veces entre dioses de larga vida y otras veces entre seres humanos. Siempre trató de aprender de sus errores para desarrollar todas las perfecciones. De este modo, él purificaba su mente y removía los tres venenos formados por los apegos, el odio y la ilusión en un yo propio, que son las raíces de todos los estados insatisfactorios. Por eso, la gente lo llamó Bodhisattva, lo que significa Ser que Aspira la Suprema Iluminación. Nadie realmente sabe por cuántos millones de vidas renació ese gran héroe. Pero, se han contado muchas historias, incluyendo la siguiente que nos habla de un príncipe llamado de la Palabra Sabia. Después de muchas vidas más, finalmente ese Gran Ser llegó a su meta y en nuestro tiempo lo recordamos con mucho amor y respeto como el Buda.
2. LA ENSEÑANZA DE LOS DIOSES
Después de un año, la reina tuvo otro hijo y lo llamaron Príncipe Luna. Cuando ambos niños comenzaron a caminar, la reina se enfermó seriamente y murió. Buscando a quien le ayudara con el cuidado de los niños, el rey encontró a una princesa y la hizo su nueva reina. Después de unos años, esta reina alumbró a un bello niño y lo llamaron Príncipe Sol. El rey, lleno de felicidad, quería recompensar a su reina por criar a los tres niños y le concedió un deseo para complacerla. La reina, poniéndose a pensar, dijo: “Gracias, mi señor, voy a esperar para expresar mi deseo en otro momento futuro.” El tiempo transcurrió feliz y los tres príncipes se hicieron tres apuestos jóvenes. Muy enojado dijo: “Mis dos primeros hijos son como estrellas brillantes. ¿Cómo puedo permitir que mi reino sea heredado por mi tercer hijo? La gente no lo aceptaría. ¡Esto simplemente no puede ser!” La reina se quedó callada. Tan feliz que el rey había estado, ahora le cayó una gran tristeza. Estaba asustado y lleno de temores. Temía que la reina causara daño a sus primeros dos hijos mediante algún juego sucio. Por eso decidió encontrar una manera para asegurar la vida de esos dos hijos. En secreto, el rey llamó al príncipe de la Palabra Buena y a su hermano, el Príncipe Luna a su despacho y les comunicó el desdichado deseo de la reina. Con gran tristeza les hizo entender que la única manera de garantizar su vida era que se fueran del reino. Sólo debían regresar después de su muerte para ocupar las posiciones que le correspondían frente al reino. Los dos príncipes, obedeciendo a su padre, aceptaron su orden y se prepararon para salir del reino. Cuando estaban listos, se despidieron de su padre y de sus amigos y se pusieron en marcha. Cruzando por los jardines del palacio, se encontraron con el Príncipe Sol. Él siempre había sido muy afectuoso y quería mucho a sus dos hermanos mayores. Al escuchar que se iban por mucho tiempo, no lo quiso aceptar y decidió irse con ellos. De este modo, los tres príncipes emprendieron el viaje juntos. Viajaron durante meses, hasta que llegaron a un país montañoso en los Himalayas. Muy cansados se sentaron debajo de un árbol. De repente, el demonio del agua emergió de la profundidad y lo agarró. Enseguida le preguntó: “Dime, ¿cuál es la enseñanza de los dioses?” Asustado, el Príncipe Sol contestó: “Conozco esa respuesta. El sol y la luna son la enseñanza de los dioses.” “¡No conoces la respuesta y por lo tanto eres mío ahora!” dijo contento el demonio de agua. Luego haló al Príncipe Sol hacia la profundidad y lo encerró en una cueva. Mírame, estoy lleno de sucio del viaje y no se me permite pronunciar esas enseñanzas sabias en esta condición.”Para entonces, el demonio del agua se había percatado que este príncipe era alguien especial. Por eso, él mismo se puso a lavarlo y refrescarlo, le dio agua de beber con hojas de loto y le dió unas raíces suaves de loto para comer. Incluso le preparó un asiento confortable y lo decoró con bellas flores silvestres. Después de guardar su espada, arco y flechas, el Gran Ser tomó asiento y el demonio feroz se colocó a sus pies, como si fuera un discípulo escuchando a su maestro. Entonces, el príncipe de la Palabra Sabia dijo:” La enseñanza de los dioses es la siguiente: “Debes avergonzarte de tus actos malsanos.
No debes envolverte en actos maliciosos. Por lo contrario, siempre debes dedicarte a actos del bien, que llevan felicidad a los demás y que ayudan a la humanidad. Luego brillará en tu corazón la luz de la felicidad y de la paz.”El demonio del agua se sintió complacido con la respuesta y dijo: “Príncipe de gran saber, me siento muy satisfecho con tu respuesta. Me has hecho tan feliz, que te devolveré uno de tus hermanos. ¿Cuál de los dos eliges?”
El Príncipe de la Palabra Sabia le dijo: “Devuélveme a mi hermano menor, el Príncipe Sol.” El demonio le respondió: “Mi estimado príncipe, tan sabio que conoce la enseñanza de los dioses, sin embargo, no lo estás practicando.” El príncipe preguntó: “¿Por qué dices eso?” El demonio contestó:” Porque dejas morir el que es mayor y salvas el menor. ¡No estás respetando a los mayores!” Entonces, el príncipe dijo: “Oh demonio, conozco la enseñanza de los dioses y ciertamente la estoy practicando. Al querer evitar esos resultados tan desfavorables, te pido que sueltes al Príncipe Sol.” El demonio de agua quedó profundamente impresionado por lo que escuchó y dijo: “Bien dicho, bien dicho, mi estimado señor. Conoces a la enseñanza de los dioses y verdaderamente la estás practicando. Muy feliz te devolveré a ambos hermanos.” Tan pronto habló, se introdujo al agua y trajo consigo a ambos príncipes hacia la superficie. Estaban mojados, pero no habían sufrido ningún daño. Más tarde, el Bodhisattva continuó aconsejando al demonio diciendo: “Oh demonio de agua, eres mi nuevo amigo. Pienso que debes haber cometido muchos actos malsanos en tus vidas anteriores para haber nacido como un demonio feroz que se alimenta devorando a la gente. Si continuas de esta manera, te quedarás atrapado en un estado deplorable aun en tus vidas futuras. Las obras malsanas llevan a la vergüenza, a situaciones dolorosas y a renacimientos desfavorables. Sin embargo, las obras buenas son la causa del disfrute de respeto, de paz y de un renacimiento favorable. Por lo tanto, sería mucho mejor para ti cambiar tu manera y en lugar de proseguir con tus actos impuros dedicarte de ahora en adelante a obras del bien.” De este modo, el demonio se arrepintió de sus malas maneras y los príncipes vivieron felices bajo su protección. Un día llegó la noticia de la muerte de su padre. Entonces, los tres príncipes, junto con su amigo el demonio del agua, regresaron a su ciudad. El príncipe de la Palabra Sabia fue coronado como rey, el príncipe Luna como Primer Ministro y el Príncipe Sol como comandante del ejército. Al demonio del agua lo gratificaron con un lugar seguro para vivir, donde le atendieron muy bien, dándole mucha comida y todo lo que le hacía falta para el resto de su vida. De este modo, todos podían acumular pensamientos buenos y actos meritorios que los llevarían a renacer en el reino del cielo.

Los actos malsanos son causa de vergüenza y temor,
mientras los actos buenos son causa del disfrute de respeto y paz.
