Christ says in Luke 21:25

I am terrified and sad with what is happening in Japan on Friday. The biggest earthquake hit Japan has caused a 10 meter tsunami wave to hit the eastern coast of Japan, causing death and damage. Looking at the photos of the disaster, I am struck with the realization that for all our technological advancement, we are always at the mercy of Nature. It seems like the humanity and perserverence of the Japanese people will be severely tested in the days to come. What would I do in the face of such tragedy?

Natural disasters happen so suddenly and there is something that my mind cannot cope about the huge number of people who have been affected. Tsunami that tossed cars like toys, swept bodies in the streets, and tore families apart. It's absolutely horrible. Human beings are always searching for answers. When it comes to such catastrophes, we look beyond scientific explanations for a metaphysical explanation. Some may say that the tsunami is a punishment from Lao Mu. Someone says it was caused by the collective karma of the Japanese. Master Li zhi cautioned against attributing everything to karma. In fact, the view that every misfortune that happens is caused by karma is classified as a wrongful view as it encourages fatalism.

It can feel helpless for us watching these events unfold. When one becomes a member of Tao we have the Three Treasures, and we can apply this in this time of crisis. Natural Disasters should make us be realized the reality of this world. There are eight major types of suffering in this world: Suffering of birth, Suffering of old age, Suffering of disease, Suffering of death, Suffering due to separation from loved ones, Suffering due to meeting with those that one does not like, Suffering due to unfulfilled wishes and suffering due to the raging skandhas. Instead of attributing the catastrophe to Lao Mu or karmic forces that we cannot verify, we can see that natural disasters are simply natural occurrences in a world which is inherently filled with suffering.

If we can offer our practice, service, or generosity to the victims of the tsunami then we no longer need to feel helpless. We can pray to Lao Mu for those who are separated from their loved ones. With the Three Treasures we ask the help of a deity in the sky. Our positive thoughts, expressed through prayers and blessings, can benefit others.Blessings and prayers nurture compassion and kindness.
